Hypnotherapy is a clinical modality that uses guided relaxation and focused attention techniques to induce a trance-like state where the individual is more receptive to suggestions from their inner self and the therapist. Through the use of guided relaxation techniques, visualization, and verbal suggestions, the client is in a state of heightened self-perception which allows the client to release repressed information to make changes to unwanted behaviors and address issues for healing such as repressed memories, depression, anxiety, phobias, smoking, addictions, and chronic pain.

While in a hypnagogic state, it is important to note that individuals are not unconscious or lose control at any time. The individual is fully aware of themselves and their surroundings and can respond to suggestions and stimuli at all times.
